Here are five, kidnapping ransoms gone horribly wrong. 5 kidnapping The kidnapping, and eventual murder of Lee Matthews in 2004, is a case that brought the nation of South Africa together through grief and terror.

Born in 1983, Lee was a university student who had just come of age

when she was ripped away from her family.

Her tragic life story began with her simple birthday celebration on July 8th, 2004.

Lee had planned something somewhat extravagant for her 21st birthday

as she decided to extend the celebration over the weekend.

This time it would be a themed party and it would be held at a club.

The Matthews, who were rather well off, couldn't have been happier to agree to Lee's idea.

The night ended on a good note, but little did they know, this would be the last time that they'd be together as a family.

The very next day, on July 9th, Lee was abducted from a parking lot at Bond University

where she attended as a commerce student.

Just shortly after the kidnapping, the Matthews family then received a call from the

kidnapper demanding a ransom in exchange for Lee's freedom.

It didn't take long for Rob Matthews,

Lee's father, to raise the amount of 50,000 South African Rand,

which is roughly 3,000 US dollars as of today.

The drop-off was made near the Grasmere Toll Plaza south of Johannesburg.

Much to Mr. Matthews' confusion confusion though, Lee wasn't given back during that exchange.
