Greg is away this week. So today I am joined by two special guests,

Catherine Hughes and Danielle Gaeta from the historic Morris Jumel Mansion, which is located in

Washington Heights in northern Manhattan at 160th and Edgecombe Avenue. And it dates back to 1765,

making it Manhattan's oldest surviving residents.

We'll hear a bit about the mansion story today, but we'll be focusing our attention on its second main tenant, the remarkable Eliza Jumel, who was born in 1775 and would move into the mansion in 1810, and live there for most

of her long and very eventful life. But let's start at the end. On July 18, 1865, the New York Times

carried an obituary for one of the city's best known

and most colorful personalities, Madame Eliza B. Jumel, a woman who had commanded a place in the city's

social life for decades, even while shrouded in mystery and rumors, and more than a touch of

scandal.

The obituary reads,

Died on Sunday morning, July 16.
