Welcome to the MyBuddyGreen podcast. I'm Jason Wackib, founder and co-CEO of MyBuddyGreen and your host.

0:07.2

So Daniel, welcome. Thanks so much for having me. It's so great to have you. I am a big fan of both

0:14.5

of your recent books, Spellbound and Molecule and more. Really enjoyed both. So let's start with

0:21.3

your background. Tell us about what you do and what led you to write both of those incredible

0:26.6

books. I'm a psychiatrist. I'm a clinical professor at George Washington University.

0:33.1

And what led me to write the books was just really interest. I found that there were so many

0:39.6

interesting things related to the unconscious mind and also related to dopamine and I wanted to

0:46.4

share them. I wanted to write something that would resonate with lots and lots of people because

0:51.3

by the time I started writing these books, I had really gone through a lot of my academic career

0:56.7

writing review articles, writing clinical trials. And it's interesting work. It's good work,

1:03.2

but not very many people read these things. Maybe a couple dozen. So after years and years of

1:09.3

writing things that only a tiny sliver of the population would be interested in, I wanted to

1:14.8

write something that would resonate more broadly. Well, when you say broadly, given your credentials,

1:21.2

I'm reading Spellbound and then all of a sudden I stumble upon you talking about practices like

1:26.9

numerology, meditation, tarot cards, alchemy, and the magic, as you said. So again, given your

1:33.6

credentials, I was surprised to find that, but we'll come back to that. At the highest level,

1:40.1

the conscious and unconscious mind, let's start there. Walk us through that relationship.

1:46.0

Most people really don't give very much credit to their unconscious mind. They kind of assume

1:52.6

that they're the one in charge inside of their head and nothing could be farther from the truth.

1:59.2

If you take a moment to think about it, the conscious mind, the part of your brain that you have

2:04.7

control over is only a very tiny part of what goes on inside your head. And in fact, studies have

2:12.2

shown that the unconscious mind engages in half a million times more processing from moment to
