Jim, you taught deception detection at the FBI.

What do you think is most important in detecting a lie?

The first thing is you have to norm the person. Every individual has their own idelect,

that's their own personal dialect,

and everyone has their own mannerisms and quirks and ways of communicating when they're

speaking normally.

If you norm that, if you get to know that, then when you ask questions and they're being

deceptive, they're going to experience some kind of changes in in verbal nonverbal or non-linguistic

verbal behaviors so you have to look at all of that sort of take it in all at once

and that's how you determine if somebody is under the stress that's usually associated with lying.

And I've heard you speak too about how people when they're lying sometimes they'll

they'll kind of push others to make decisions if they're trying to get somebody to do something.
