Honor a Reaper was enjoying a stroll in Christchurch's Victoria Park in the

Kashmir hills. It was a mild winter afternoon and accompanying her were her

16-year-old daughter Pauline and her best friend Juliet.

The three of them had gone for a treat at the tea rooms in Victoria Park and then decided

to go for a walk in the hills. Honora was happy to go on this outing with her daughter and her friend.

News that Juliet was leaving New Zealand to move to South Africa had been tough on Pauline.

At first, Pauline wanted to go with Juliet. tough on and was depressed a lot of the time. Honora and her husband Bert said that she was not to visit Juliet at her family's home,

Pauline resented her parents and even wrote in her diary.

This afternoon mother told me I could not go to Island again until I was 8 stone and more cheerful.

As I am now 7 stone there was little hope. She is so unreasonable. Why could mother not die?

So when Pauline asked her mother to take her and Juliet to Victoria Park

as a last goodbye, Honora was pleased. She thought her daughter had accepted the fact that her

friend was leaving, and that sad as it was, she would stay behind.
