So in those early days, there was a real feeling in the White House that they communicated to

Sinclair.

They were going to endorse him or at least his plan, which would have secured it.

No question.

But in the next couple of days, the tide started turning immediately because the full force

of money went at work.

And the people opposed to Sinclair essentially created the modern political campaign.

Out of scratch, almost.

That is how desperate they were in those last two months, how flat footed they were.

They dumped all the money in the world in the California.

And enough of it got thrown in there that they were able to cobble together a machine

of propaganda unseen in political campaigning until that point.

Anywhere close.

The Hollywood studios, which had a specific gripe with Sinclair because not only did he

promise to tax the hell out of the moguls.

He also wanted to open a rival state-owned movie studio that would produce films cooperatively,

like a presumably in exchange for barter that would compete with Hollywood offerings and

be shown in state-owned theaters because at this point, most theaters were owned by movie

studios.

I mean, he was literally threatening directly to put them out of business, like a public

option for entertainment, a real one.

So the studios reacted ferociously.
