0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to Choose a Phi. Today on the show we have another household of Phi update. We have Matt and Megan who if you remember from prior episodes, they're both naval officers. So Matt is a helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy of the UK Royal Navy and Meg is an officer in the US Navy. |
0:19.2 | And we actually had them on three times previously. They had some of the absolute best experts for their situation. We chatted with them with Dave McKeegan about international tax issues and Doug Nordman, our friend from the military guide talking about all things military. |
0:37.2 | Right, so pensions and health care and just what do you do after leaving the military and there were some really interesting things in there about the military inferiority complex which I know I personally was shocked at and I love to talk to Matt and Megan about that today. And this should be wonderful. So I'm really looking forward to catching up with them finding out what they've been up to over the last two years. So with that welcome to choose a Phi. |
1:03.2 | You're listening to choose a Phi radio. The blueprint for financial independence lives here. |
1:19.2 | We're looking to unlock the secrets to financial independence and early retirement. You're in the right place. Stay tuned and join a community of like my people who are getting off the industry and taking control of their lives in the pursuit of financial independence. Choose a Phi. Your home for financial independence online. |
1:49.2 | Matt and Megan welcome back to choose a Phi. Thanks for being here. Yeah, this should be fun. This should be so much fun. So what's cool is we've never met, but I feel like I know you because I've been following the households of Phi series with the expert guests and you guys who have been on. |
2:07.2 | So just to fill the audience in. I know I said this on the front side, but if people want to go back and listen, we originally introduced you in episode two, 21 and then you spoke with Dave McKay again in episode two, 45 about international tax implications. |
2:23.2 | And then again, in episode two, 96 with Doug Nordman from the military guide, our good friend, but it's been almost two years, right? I think it was February of 2021 that that episode with Doug went live. So it was probably almost two years ago that we recorded. |
2:39.2 | And I imagine a lot has happened actually what's interesting is the two of you are sitting right next to each other as opposed to across the pond. |
2:47.2 | So my first question is Matt, what's going on here? You're in the US. Yeah, I'm finally here. I'm very nice to speak to as well, Brad. The feelings completely mutual. We feel like we know you, but you know, we've had to listen to a lot more of your episodes than you've had to listen to. |
3:02.2 | So probably what yeah, I am actually out of the Royal Navy now as of the end of last year. So I left in October last year and since then have been going through all of the really difficult process for green card immigration and getting things sorted to come over full time to the USA. |
3:23.2 | As you can see, I'm here. I'm legal. I promise you and I've been here permanently now since April this year. So not quite a year anniversary yet. |
3:33.2 | His full Florida man transformation is complete. He officially owns a pair of crocs. That's one more pair of crocs than I own. So fully Florida now. |
3:42.2 | Oh, that's amazing. I'm seeing a very tropical looking shirt here as well. When in run. That's amazing. Okay. Well, there are a million, million questions about that. Obviously I suspect we're going to spend a decent bit of time chatting about that. But yeah, Meg, I guess has anything major other than now having your husband here in the US. Anything major going on. |
4:06.2 | I'd say that's pretty major. I'm still in the same role with the US Navy that I was in before when we last hopped. I'm getting ready to transition to my next role here at the beginning of FY 23. |
4:18.2 | So I'll be moving. We'll be moving together across the world to the island nation of Guam. That's where the US Navy has decided we'll live next. So we're very excited about that. |
4:31.2 | I am six weeks away from finishing my master's degree in human resources management. And yeah, that's about it. Just trying to get more marketable. Wow. Holy cow. Okay. Well, I did not. |
4:45.2 | I did not fully anticipate when we started this episode that Matt would have left the Navy living in the US in in crocs. And you guys moving to go. |
4:55.2 | Oh, my goodness. Okay. This gets better. I think the crocs might have to go on on the show. |
5:03.2 | That's incredible. Okay. Wow. I am rarely lost for words on where to start because I want to talk about all of these things. |
5:11.2 | But I guess let's start chronologically. So Matt, sounds like it's been almost a full calendar year since you left the Navy. |
5:20.2 | Right. But I guess you said you've been in the US full time about six plus months now. Talk me through because I suspect this is like a big, a big transition. |
