I'm back in plenary session, virtual edition. I'm joined by Katie Sharf. Dr. Sharf is an infectious

disease expert. She's an ID doctor at Kaiser Permanente Northwest in Portland, Oregon. She's the chief of

ID. She's also the author of two really interesting papers that we're going to walk through and talk

about some of the complexity with methodology. I just want to read the title and then the conclusion, and then I'll turn it over to you, Dr. Sharp,

the title of the papers, so people get a sense of what we're going to talk about.

Risk of myoparocarditis following COVID-19 mRNA vaccination in a large integrated health

system, a comparison of completeness and timeliness of two methods.

Surveillance of myopacarditis

following COVID-19 booster dose vaccination in a large integrated health system. And I will just read

the conclusion, which I think will point us what we're going to talk about. We identified

additional valid cases of myopacarditis following an MRNA vaccination that would be missed

by the VSD search algorithm, which depends on select hospital discharge diagnosis codes.

The true incidence of myoporacarditis is markedly higher than the incidents reported to advisory

committees. The VSD should validate its search algorithm.

And then the other one concludes, we identified a rate of 9.1 cases of myoporocarditis

per 100,000 COVID-19 booster doses, which is higher than prior estimates

reported by VAERS. Dr. Sharf, thanks so much for doing this. Pleasure to talk to you.
