Summary

In this urgent episode ripped from the top political and national security headlines, host Paul Rieckhoff talks with the only truly Independent Senator and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee: Maine’s Angus King. King returns to the show to answer tough questions, share the latest from inside the Senate, and break down Hegseth's "kill everybody" directive amid shifting stories on the strikes that killed dozens, including survivors in the water—explicitly cited as illegal in the DoD Law of War Manual.  Paul presses King on the need for public hearings, Admiral Bradley's pending testimony about strike orders, the mysterious resignation of Southern Command Commander, Navy Admiral Holsey—and Hegseth's calendar at the time of the strikes, questioning his leadership as Venezuela tensions escalate with U.S. naval buildup. King slams Congress's abdication of war powers, Trump's "garbage" insults toward Somalis, and the purge of Pentagon legal experts, urging independents to hold the line for accountability. This is a conversation with a powerful, honorable and pivotal Senator that is at the center of all it. The lone independent Senator that can be a unique bridge to real bi-partisan accountability.  Millions of Americans—and especially Independent Americans—are looking to King now to meet this moment. Welcome to Independent Americans.

0:19.7

Welcome to episode 387. I'm your host, Paul Reichoff. It is Wednesday,

0:25.3

December 3rd. Yes, it's only Wednesday. I'm coming here today from Northern California, USA.

0:30.7

I made it out of the snowpocalypse and the storm that's hit much of America. And I'm on the West Coast

0:35.4

for a short one to talk about the growing power of

0:37.9

our independent veterans movement, which will be perfect today because our guest coming up is a

0:42.2

returning champion. Senator Angus King, the only real independent in the Senate. He's from Maine.

0:48.2

He's always a voice of insight and reason. He's also a member of the Senate Armed Services

0:51.7

Committee, and he's coming up in just a minute. But before that, a lot is happening today in just in the last 24 hours. The latest on the boat strikes, Hegsteth and allegations of war crime. Yesterday, Hegsteth said he did not see survivors of the boat attack clinging to the wreckage. Chris may be able to play a clip in here. Somebody asked me a question about the second strike. I didn't know about the second strike.

1:30.9

I didn't know anything about people. I wasn't involved in it. A couple of hours later, I learned that that commander had made the, which he had the complete authority to do. And by the way, Admiral Bradley made the correct decision to ultimately sink the boat and eliminate the threat. But Hegseth also said kind of patronizingly, this is called the fog of war.

2:01.7

It's what you and the press in the press don't understand. I want to make a note that there are a number of good defense journalists who are also combat vets, and they understand the fog of war. Folks like James Laporta, who's been a guest on this show, CJ Shivers at the New York Times, Alex Horton at the Washington Post, one of the guys who's been reporting on this and others. A reminder, too, only 29% of Americans say they support the military killings without the involvement of a court or judge. And a majority are still opposed. Some are unsure. They haven't struck a boat since November 15th, which I think is noteworthy. As of November 15th, at least 83 people have been killed,

2:06.9

21 strikes on 22 vessels. And some more related news, the family of a fisherman killed in a U.S.

2:12.7

boat strike has filed a human rights complaint. The family of a Caribbean fisherman who was killed on September 15th has filed a formal complaint with the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights, alleging the government illegally killed him.

2:26.5

We've got some more big news as Hegg says, worst week ever continues.

2:30.7

Pentagon Inspector General investigation into Signalgate is now complete. The report was

2:35.6

reportedly given to the Secretary of Defense yesterday, a classified final version, and will be

2:40.2

delivered to the House and the Senate Armed Services Committee for review, and a declassified,

2:45.0

redacted version is set to be released publicly as early as tomorrow. I'll ask Senator King

2:49.5

about that in just a minute. I think it's

2:52.2

about damn time. The public needs to see it and our troops especially need to see it. They need to

2:57.0

know if they can trust the man leading them and if he's held to a lower standard than they are.
