There's no real set for being an astronaut. There's no, we'll do this this and then you'll

be an astronaut. Each case is different and so the way I thought about it was well what

if I can't become an astronaut? What if for whatever reason they won't let me and they

keep telling me no what would I want to do if I couldn't and so I tried to make decisions

based on that. I learned to fly airplanes, I learned to scuba dive. I was doing things

that I was interested in that I thought would help me in my application. You don't know

if it's going to work out. You could just keep getting told no and so I think it's important

to enjoy the journey because you don't know what the outcome's going to be.

You applied for NASA many times all over all how many times did you apply to be an astronaut?

Four times. Four times and after one of those times you said okay I'm going to start looking

at other alternatives and you went to get a PhD at MIT in robotics. So that right there was

a lesson we've got rejected, rejected, rejected but you still figure out ways to kind of pursue

your dreams even if it's not the exact outcome you wanted the process was still happening for you.

Yeah no control over the outcome but I certainly had control over whether or not I could keep

trying and as long as I kept trying I felt like there was still a chance.

So Mike, Massimino did I get this pronunciation right and I know in our podcast I started off

saying it wrong. So Mike, Massimino is the astronaut that fixed the Hubble Space Telescope many years

ago. So why you see all those beautiful images now coming from space is all because of this

man he's been up in space a couple times. Stories incredible and you're also open to ask questions
