Summary

Why is insulin so important for us to control and why does a ketogenic diet help so many people? Professor Ben Bikman has been studying these questions in his lab at BYU for years and he is one of the foremost authorities on the subject. As you will see in this interview, he is also passionate about this topic. He describes the roles of insulin and glucagon, how protein intake affects them, the role of ketones as a metabolic actor, and of course the practical aspects of living low carb while being a father, a husband and a researcher.

Today I'm joined by Professor Ben Bickman, who's a PhD, an associate professor of physiology

and developmental biology at BYU.

Now, Dr. Bickman got his PhD in bioenergetics, and he did a postdoc fellowship at Duke

University in Singapore, specifically

0:21.6

in metabolic disorders. He also works for company Insulin IQ and he is a scientist. He is a

0:28.6

true scientist at heart and I think you'll appreciate that in this discussion. It does get

0:34.1

fairly technical times, I have to admit, because he does like to talk about the science and the specifics.

0:39.3

But importantly, we try and bring it back to how the science can apply to us

0:43.3

as individuals in our everyday life.

0:45.3

And you know when Professor Bickman says something,

0:47.7

you know it's based on research, you know it's based in science.

0:50.6

And interestingly, he came to the low carb world through science,

0:55.0

whereas most people come to it through a personal experience, a personal connection,

1:00.0

and then start to learn about the science.

1:02.0

He sort of came the other way and I think that makes him fairly unique, but also fascinating.

1:06.0

So I love talking with Ben.

1:09.0

I love having scientific discussions with him.

1:11.6

And for you, I hope you get a lot out of this from science,

1:14.6

but I hope you can take away some practical implications of what the science means.

1:18.6

And also a sense of Ben as a human being and how he lives his life by the tenets of keeping insulin low

1:25.6

and how he helps to kind of educate his family about
