Well, I have in my hand a book of common prayer.

After I graduated from college, I went to Reformed Episcopal Seminary, and it was then in West

Philadelphia, it's now in the suburbs, and I was first exposed to the Book of Common Prayer.

I can remember thinking as I first went through a prayer book service that if this is prayer,

I've probably never really prayed because these prayers were so deep and rich. And there are all kinds of services for worship in the

Book of Common Prayer, but there's prayers for every occasion you would ever encounter in your life.

And it's always been a prize possession of mine. I find myself going back

again and again and reading these prayers and thinking they do so much such a better job than I

often do of expressing the cries of my heart. And I'm going to read

you one example, but I would say to you, if you're a Southern Baptist or you're a Methodist

or you're a Presbyterian or you're an independent whatever, you ought to get

yourself a copy of the Book of Common Prayer. And I think it will deepen and enhance your prayer. But it just reinforces how desperately we need God's grace in every single

situation of life. This is a copy of the Book of Common Prayer from 1689. The first one was written in 1552, revised in 1689,

and then this is a bit of a revision, but it's pretty faithful to the 1689 copy of the book of

common prayer. And it is rich.
