Summary

We get into the sport to grow and become more confident, but . . . what do we do in those weak moments? The best athletes (and people) are always learning. Today, we look at a lot of examples we experience in coaching and how we approach insecurities that pop up in training. The stress of missing workouts, injuries, worry about not being ready, judging ourselves too harshly, etc. Training should be a way to become more whole and not judge ourselves by comparison. Learn your limits and how to approach them in a positive way.

Topics:

  • Do you think you’ll be ready?
  • The obsession with wanting to know and predict
  • Adding “judgements to our plate”
  • Do you need to do MORE?
  • Making up missed workouts
  • Does not getting a PR mean you’re slower?
  • Was this session good enough?
  • Who are you letting down?
  • Do you think that race is a good idea?
  • The endless puzzle
  • You just don’t know
  • Are you where you thought you’d be?
  • Over-judging yourself
  • Sitting with yourself
  • You shouldn’t be stressed about something that gives you joy
  • The ability to take days off
  • The three P’s of stress
  • Training to heal or be whole
  • Learning from overtraining
  • Leaving wiggle room for life
  • Depression and anxiety

Because athletes will so often obsess about missing days that they'll make comments again, like,

0:08.5

I'm so stressed out that I'm missing a session today and what it's going to do to my training.

0:13.3

You know what, take the day off, which is like the absolute opposite of what they want to hear.

0:17.7

And that might sound cruel.

0:18.9

That might sound like counterproductive,

0:21.1

but it's actually, I think, good because in order to get athletes to wrap their brains around

0:25.7

the fact that, hey, you shouldn't be stressed out about something that should bring you joy.

0:29.5

This is a hobby. It's not a career. What's happening,

0:46.9

Hey, dude, happy Thursday.

0:49.5

Those of you listening and catching up, it's January 3, 23rd, 2020, and welcome.

Crushing our podcast, 3, 341.

1:02.6

3141.

1:04.4

Man, it's a podcast.

1:06.2

Yeah, at some point it's going to seem like a whole lot.

1:09.1

I mean, 341 seems like quite a bit, but at some point,

1:11.9

I think maybe when we hit 500, four digits, it'll seem like a whole lot. But I think the fact that,

1:19.2

as most of you probably know it, if you're new, we produce this podcast twice a week,

1:24.3

traditionally Monday and Thursday, but always twice we can have so for three years.

1:28.4

So I think the fact that we kind of chip away twice a week and haven't missed that since we started

1:32.8

probably, hey, it's just more proof in the pudding, the consistency and commitment add up in the long haul.

1:39.8

1:45.7

And then when they get there, you kind of don't know how you got here.
