0:31.0 | Hello and welcome back to Cult Leader. I'm your Cult Leader Spencer Henry. If you're new here, Cult Leader is a podcast about whatever weird thing I feel like talking about. |
0:43.0 | Okay, Cult Bhabes. I know I missed an episode last week, but there's been so much going on. I was in Utah, then I was home for three days and then I was in San Francisco. |
0:53.0 | As soon as I got back to LA, I just had so much work to catch up on as well as launching the Cult Leader in Namal Pins, which I posted them on Instagram. They came out so cool. I'm so excited about them. They did sell out pretty quick, so I placed a larger order. That should be here pretty soon. |
1:10.0 | Oh, another thing that is on the Cult Leader podcast Instagram right now is my friend Jen sent me. She used to be a client of mine in LA, but she lives in Missouri. And so she actually drove to Gypsy Rose's house and sent me a picture of it. So I posted that on there. You have to see it. That's it. How the... What do you got to say? |
1:33.0 | Nothing. She just put her head under the blanket. So same. All right. Today's story. Are you ready? Are you ready? Because it is the O'Winefield Chicken Coop murders, and it's got to be in my top 10 favorite stories ever. |
1:48.0 | I actually had to go through my past episodes this weekend just to make sure I hadn't already done it. You know, brain, bad at things. And I am just elated. I rewatched the movie, Changeling immediately, which is a movie that's based on these crimes. And it's just so wild. |
2:06.0 | Okay, here goes. We'll start this story on March 10th, 1928. The day nine year old Walter Collins disappeared from the Los Angeles home he shared with his mom, Christine Collins. |
2:18.0 | Christine was 40 years old at the time of his disappearance, and she was a single mother. She was originally married to Walter's father Walter Collins senior, who was an ex convict when he met Christine. But she actually didn't even know that until later on. |
2:32.0 | After giving birth to Walter in 1918, her husband Walter senior cracked under the pressure of trying to live this normal life of like a husband and a father. And he went back to what he knew how to do. Commit crime. |
2:45.0 | After getting caught committing a robbery, he was sent to the Folsom State Prison. Christine went through several attempts to have him released. And this is when she learned of his criminal past. |
2:55.0 | It did not deter her from her efforts. She still tried several times to have him released after this, but she had no luck. Back to the date of his disappearance, it's March 10th, 1928. It was a Saturday morning. |
3:07.0 | Christine gives her nine year old son some money to go down to the local movie theaters and see a film, but he did not return home. |
3:14.0 | Christine spent hours scouring the neighborhood looking for her son when he didn't show up, but by night time she knew something was wrong. It wasn't like Walter to not stay around the house after dark. |
3:25.0 | She obviously phoned the police department. However, the Los Angeles police department told her there was nothing they could do that evening and just try and wait and see if he shows up. |
3:35.0 | The Los Angeles police department was already under kind of heavy scrutiny during this time in general because crime was really on the up and up in this city. |
3:43.0 | And general public felt like they weren't really doing their part as police to protect, which clearly a lot's changed just kidding. |
3:52.0 | But days go by weeks and the community is really coming together to help aid in the search for Walter to no avail. |
3:59.0 | The pressure from the public is getting heavier and heavier and the police begin putting a plan into action. |
