We're speaking of the major feature in the Financial Times.

That's the pink paper out of London about a man named Munir,

who is the general in charge, the field marshal in charge of the state within a state in Pakistan, the army.

However, in jail is a man named

Khan, who was a previous prime minister, and the prime minister now, Prime Minister Shabazz Sharif,

is important, but not as important as Khan's future. If I read this correctly, Mr. Ambassador, Pakistani

politics are a marvel. Khan has been in jail for, I believe,

more than a year, maybe two years. I lose count. What is the purpose of keeping him in jail,

so he can't run for office, so he can't cause trouble to the army? What is the anxiety about him

in general? He's an older man. He's world famous.

As far as I can see, he's a rallying cry for a party that's always going to be there.

So what is the fear?

I think that the calculus of the generals is that the party is not going to be there without Khan,

unlike the other two parties which opposed the military at different times and were able to transfer leadership within their families.

So Shabashir's brother was the leader.

Shabazz took over. Benad Bouto was the leader. Her husband took over and now the son is in position.

Imran Khan does not have such a succession in mind and his followers actually are against any

dynastic succession.
