0:09.8	I think you're the first NASA scientist I've ever talked to.

0:15.4	How did you get involved with NASA?

0:19.4	I had been... My PhD was in physics, and I had done work in studying the dynamics of the human
0:30.0	brain in response to auditory stimulation.
0:34.6	And I was studying magnetic fields generated by neurons. So magneto and
0:39.0	cephalography. And I was interested in how to separate brain signals. When you record
0:49.7	EEG by putting electrodes on the surface of the head or do magneto and cellulography.
0:54.9	Each detector picks up a mixture of signals.
0:58.0	So what you really want to know is what signals are coming from which different part of the brain,
1:03.4	but you really can only record mixtures.
1:05.1	So I'd worked on algorithms to separate mixed signals.
1:10.5	And these were AI algorithms.
1:12.6	This is in the late 90s before anybody heard of AI.
1:15.6	I've been doing the AI for 30 years, but we didn't call it AI.
1:20.6	They were machine learning algorithms, right?
1:23.6	And so I was doing work in neuroscience, but my PhD, my original interests were originally in physics.
1:29.6	And I got, I was at a neuroscience conference in D.C. and visited two of my friends who were married, an astrophysicist and an astronomer.
