From 2000-2001, the economy was such that competition was intensifying,

so actual mass media journalism was becoming a commodity and you had to figure out a way

to reinvent, to stand out.

Yeah, and what I was doing was I was just having millions of ideas on the go and I felt

quite overwhelmed by data and information. And as a particular article I was researching

that was very complicated and I thought, oh, you know, I just cannot track all the perspectives

in this article, so I'm going to draw it so I drew out like a sketch.

And there was a little pink moment and I thought, wow, maybe I could make, I don't have to write

the article, I could just make diagrams. And then I started looking around and I discovered

this thing called data visualization. You're not tied to a vertical linear depiction of this

information, so it's a bit more enjoyable. You can apply visualization to any topic, any day

or any subject matter, anything you're interested in, you can be visualized and then suddenly

it becomes more digestible, more approachable, more memorable.

So I'm here with David McCannness, the master of all infographics, you don't mind if I call you

that right? I'm blasting a little bit, but okay, go on. So you're the author of the visual

miscellaneous and what was the second title? Knowledge is beautiful. Knowledge is beautiful.

And I actually knew about you long before we met because your infographics have this tendency

to go viral, like everyone sees them. And you did this one infographic, which I've bookmarked
