Summary

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI) can be split into at least five core components: 1) sleep restriction therapy, 2) sleep hygiene, 3) stimulus control, 4) cognitive restructuring, and 5) relaxation therapies. Sleep restriction therapy has been shown to be one of the most effective components of CBTI. It isn’t about restricting your sleep so much as limiting the amount of time you are allowed to spend in bed, and it aims to drive up the brain’s appetite for sleep, and...

Hi there, it's Matt here once again and welcome back to in fact the final episode in this

0:09.9

mini series all about insomnia. So let's just dive right back in and pick up where we left off in the last episode.

0:21.1

And in that last episode I gave you the broad brush strokes of what

0:26.5

cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia or CBTI is. Today our goal is to click the magnification lens and go a little deeper in terms of

0:40.6

our understanding of CBTI. To be clear, CBTI is an incredibly complex, very skilled,

0:49.7

and very nuanced clinical therapy.

1:49.3

of five core components and these components together will cover those two main sort of silos, those two main pillars

1:59.2

of CBTI that I discussed in the last episode. Those being the cognitive of you don't need me to go there.

2:13.0

Anyway, what are those five core principles of CBTI?

2:18.0

Well, the first is something called sleep restriction therapy. The second is

2:23.8

called sleep hygiene. The third is what we call stimulus control.

2:29.7

The fourth is called cognitive restructuring and the fifth centers on relaxation

2:37.6

therapies and as I noted there are other aspects of CBTI and different clinicians will emphasize different features and it all
