First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Republicans’ absurd budget proposal, the Democrats successfully killing it, and SAG-AFTRA going on strike, as well as the disgusting corporate proposals that got the film and TV industry to this point. Alex Pareene then joins as he dives into the continuing story of inflation, and what could have been if the establishment wasn’t so keen on ignoring its roots in price gouging. Next, he, Emma, and Sam look to the Republicans’ grotesque $900bln defense bill as perfectly exemplary of the GOP’s complete capitulation to anti-woke politics despite its stunning lack of popularity – something that’s also seen in the falling popularity of the once-prophesied DeSantis campaign, before wrapping up the interview with an assessment of New York state politics post-Cuomo and what a strong NY Democratic party could mean on the national level. Andrew Leeds then walks through the central issues facing SAG-AFTRA, discussing the massive role residuals play in actors’ income, and in qualifying for healthcare and other union benefits, only for the streaming revolution to nearly take these payments off the shelves entirely. After expanding on the attempted gigification of the acting industry, Andrew wraps up by discussing the incredible spirit of solidarity in the union (and their sister orgs), and what those on the outside can do to help. Andy Kindler concludes the first half as he assesses the incredible grifting done by Jimmy Door, and tackles why the hell some famous people get so obsessed with being wrong they dive headfirst into bigotry.
