Summary

Max talks about the crash this week of a Cessna P210 in San Diego, and why it crashed. The flight originated in Concord, CA and flew for just over 4 hours to Montgomery Field in San Diego. The aircraft first tried to land at French Valley airport, was high on the approach and went missed. It diverted to Montgomery field to fly the ILS 28R, however the pilot flew about a third of a mile south of the airport, missing the runway. Five minutes after the approach, while climbing for another approach, he ran out of fuel. ATC audio provided by LiveATC.net

Sadly, we've just had another fatal crash Wednesday night at Montgomery Field in San Diego,

0:06.8

the same airport where the Cessna 340 crash occurred that we talked about in episode 301.

0:12.3

In this case, it was a Cessna P210 that was landing after a long F-R flight from Northern California.

0:19.4

Although the crash happened only a day ago, there's

0:21.4

little doubt about why it crashed, as the pilot mentions it shortly before the crash. In a moment,

0:27.1

we'll talk about the flight, play the ATC tapes, and talk about what went wrong. Hello again and

0:33.1

welcome to Aviation News Talk. My name is Max Trescott. I've been flying for 50 years. I'm the author of several books and the 2008 National Flight Instructor of the Year.

And my mission is to help you become the safest possible pilot.

check it out at AviationNewstalk.com slash 301. Now, the story of the Cessna P210 that crashed

1:06.6

in Southern California was on my local news as the aircraft departed earlier in the day

1:11.0

from the Concord California airport about 30 miles north of me in the San Francisco Bay Area.

1:16.4

I was able to read the N number off the TV screen N-1400, which is how the pilot referred to as

plane on the ATC tapes. I looked at the flight track on flightaware.com and was surprised to see that the

1:28.3

flight lasted for four hours and one minute. Twenty years ago, I owned a Cessna T-210 with a partner,

1:34.8

so I'm very familiar with these planes. The accident aircraft was a 1979 P210, a pressurized

1:40.9

version of my plane, which has a fuel capacity of 90 gallons.

1:45.0

These planes burn around 18 gallons per hour, but in climb, they probably burn closer to

1:49.7

37 gallons per hour, so in general you wouldn't want to fly much more than four hours.

1:55.5

Checking the route, I saw that the accident airplane didn't originally plan to fly to Montgomery
