When you picture a sex buyer, a John, as some people call them, what exactly do you

see?

I'll tell you what I saw before I met one in person.

I saw a dirty guy, someone with greasy hair, stubble on his face, dirt under his fingernails,

someone sleazy, slimy, grimy, and who looked like he might get pleasure out of hurting

women.

And this image might be the image I have in my head from my own personal experiences.

And maybe that's what you see, too.

But coming to Seattle forced me to come face-to-face with reality.

In most parts of the country, buyers rarely face any consequence.

But I heard that Seattle was taking kind of a revolutionary approach to dealing with the

sex trade.

Instead of arresting everyone involved, they are targeting the buyers.

And they're letting the people who sell sex go free.

What happens next is the buyers they arrest have to take a 10-week class.

And the point of this class is to re-educate men, to teach them about sexism and violence

against women.

Other cities in the country have these so-called John's classes, too.

Seattle's is by far the most intense buyers' class in the US.

And I'm going to check it out first hand.
