That's how it sounded across Israel this morning as Hamas launched a surprise

assault on the country, firing thousands of rockets and entering Israel by land and sea and by air using paragliders.

I know we talk about flare-ups of violence in this region all the time, but experts say this is very different.

In fact, a former Israeli Defence Force spokesperson called it a Pearl Harbor type of moment for the country.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hecht is a current IDF spokesperson.

These terrorists that came in this morning, they didn't go only for military targets.

They went into communities,

abducted grandmas, the abducted families, they killed children.

A very, very severe morning and we're going to respond.

The casualty numbers are shifting quickly, but as we post this,

Israeli authorities say at least 200 people in Israel have been killed with hundreds

seriously wounded. Meanwhile in Gaza the Palestinian Health Ministry

says more than 200 have been killed with over a thousand wounded as

Israel responds with airstrikes. I want to go to CNN Sam Kiley who has covered this conflict for years to

figure out how we got to this point. Sam, why was Israel caught so off guard here?
