It is birthday season here at the Nielsen household.

Sally's birthday is July 22nd.

Noah's is August 1st.

And my husband, Ryan's is August 6th.

And so it is a fun but exhausting few weeks for our family and for me.

And I am used to feeling that every year during birthday season.

But what I am not used to feeling that I am feeling this year is sadness.

And the reason why this year the birthdays, particularly Noah's, has been tensed with a great deal of sadness for me is that if you've been listening to my podcast, you may know that in November, we lost Noah's birth mother to mental illness.

And we had an open adoption with her and we're extremely close to her.

His birthday was always a really special time that we shared with her from that very first night of his birth when I was in the delivery room with her.

And I've honestly never felt closer to heaven than in the hour or two after when we were all together.
