By the way, a minor piece of baseball news that happened in the last hour that I admit I'm mildly surprised about.

Dominic Smith, the former Met who has been in Yankee camp on a non-raster invitation, had an opt-out clause today he could use if he wasn't going to make the Yankees 40-man roster.

If the Yankees were going to add him to the 40-man roster, then Dom would stick around.

If not, he had the opportunity to opt out.

And Dom Smith, who's at a good camp, who certainly we thought about as possibly making the

opening day roster, dare I say being the opening day DH with the injury to Jean-Carlo

Stanton. Well, apparently the Yankees were never adding him to the 40-man roster

because Dom Smith has indeed opted out.

He is no longer with the New York Yankees.

And so he was scratched from the lineup today.

They're playing a game tonight, a game you'll hear right here on WFAN,

and Dom Smith will not be a Yankee.

So a mild surprise, not to get in the weeds too much, but it leads me to think that Ben Rice could

make the team not just as the backup catcher, but as a third catcher and a left-handed bat who could

DH and play some first base. I think he's starting on opening day. At DH? Yeah. I think you're

your opening day, D.H. I think it's very, very possible. Ben Rice is valuable because he can catch, so you could literally just bring him as your backup catcher, but the problem is, if your backup catcher is also DHing, and then there's an injury

to your starting catcher, you lose the DH. So you're probably in a better spot of you, the Yankees,

on carrying J.C. Ascara as your backup and having Ben Rice, who can also catch, which gives you

great versatility, because now you've got three catchers on your roster.

I love it.
