Matthew 22: 1-14 - 'Invite everyone you can to the wedding.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 546 (in 'The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God') - Jesus' invitation to enter his kingdom comes in the form of parables, a characteristic feature of his teaching. Through his parables he invites people to the feast of the kingdom, but he also asks for a radical choice: to gain the kingdom, one must give everything. Words are not enough, deeds are required. The parables are like mirrors for man: will he be hard soil or good earth for the word? What use has he made of the talents he has received? Jesus and the presence of the kingdom in this world are secretly at the heart of the parables. One must enter the kingdom, that is, become a disciple of Christ, in order to "know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven". For those who stay "outside", everything remains enigmatic.

- 796 (in 'The Church is the Bride of Christ') - The unity of Christ and the Church, head and members of one Body, also implies the distinction of the two within a personal relationship. This aspect is often expressed by the image of bridegroom and bride. the theme of Christ as Bridegroom of the Church was prepared for by the prophets and announced by John the Baptist. The Lord referred to himself as the "bridegroom" (abbreviated).

Hi everyone. Welcome back to the Logical Bible Study Ministry. If you've been listening for a while,

0:15.9

you know what this podcast is all about. We look at the gospel reading for today's Mass.

0:20.9

So if you go to Mass today, you would hear from the Gospel of Matthew.

0:24.9

And our job in this podcast is to help you understand the literal sense of the text.

0:29.7

The Catholic Church's teaching is, if we want to understand the Bible, we must start with

0:34.1

the literal sense, as in what did the original author mean in their original

0:38.5

context?

0:39.3

What were they trying to convey to their audience?

0:41.6

And that is the primary meaning that the Holy Spirit inspired.

0:45.1

So we have to start with that.

0:46.8

And that's particularly important when we get to the Gospels, because we want to know

0:50.1

what did Jesus really mean in his original context.

0:53.5

We don't want to try and twist his words

0:55.3

to get them to say what we want them to mean. We always want to start with what did he probably

1:00.0

mean when he originally spoke those words. So let's jump into today's gospel reading, which is

1:06.0

Matthew chapter 22 verses 1 to 14. Another really interesting parable. Jesus began to speak to the chief priests

1:15.7

and the elders of the people in parables. The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for

1:22.5

his son's wedding. He sent his servants to call those who had been invited, but they would not come. Next, he sent

1:31.2

some more servants. Tell those who have been invited, he said, that I have my banquet all prepared,

1:38.1

my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered. Everything is ready, come to the wedding.

1:46.1

But they were not interested.

1:48.0

One went off to his farm, another to his business, and the rest seized his servants,
