Summary

Join us as we explore the transformative journey of lifelong learning, where the pursuit of knowledge reshapes our very being. As we discuss, learning is not static; it's an ever-evolving process that requires us to reassess the foundations of our understanding and embrace the idea that our knowledge and beliefs are as malleable as astronauts defining 'down' in space. In this episode, we dissect the art of inquiry, emphasizing the potency of asking the right questions, whether in scientific seminars or everyday conversations. By understanding the importance of well-crafted questions, we can transform superficial interactions into meaningful exchanges, uncovering the strategic narratives of those around us. Jeff shares how inspiration from nature led to groundbreaking medical products, exemplifying the importance of maintaining a keen observational eye. Further, we examine how mindfulness and observation can rekindle our innate curiosity, deepen our connection with the environment, and reveal the miraculous in everyday life. So, take a moment to pause, listen, and let yourself be inspired by the wonders that surround us and the infinite possibilities of continued growth and discovery. Buy Jeff's book. You know picking up sort of one thread from this what you're I think you're encouraging and I think that you have embodied this in your own life is lifelong learning, which as a term doesn't necessarily spark the imagination.

0:25.2

It's not like, oh yes, my goodness, lifelong learning, it's what I've always wanted.

0:30.5

But it is something that has been life-changing for me and it is something that my

0:37.2

wife Anna and I have worked really intentionally and repeatedly to try to encourage in our children and particularly to remove the things that would shut that down in them.

0:50.0

Well, like frankly, some of traditional school that seems to almost universally suffocate

0:56.7

the natural curiosity in children and a natural interest in reading for example.

1:02.8

I mean those are just tangible examples but this idea

1:06.8

it is its own paradigm that we are to learn

1:12.2

as a perpetual experience that one of the things that's done for me

1:19.2

is that I now think of myself as a late bloomer and it's not because everything didn't work well in my

1:26.6

teenage years or in my 20s but suddenly things that didn't seem possible to me in my 30s now seem possible to me things that I didn't seem possible to me in my 30s now seem possible to me.

1:34.4

Things that I didn't think I could learn, I'm learning.

1:37.2

And I don't know, that's something like the closest thing we have to magic.

1:41.8

Because you... closest thing we have to magic because you can it's a perpetual manifestation of the

1:49.7

discovery that there is a space between thinking and acting and once you enter it you say well what else can I learn what else can be upgraded and I think I want to just share one additional thing that I think is interesting, that it keeps coming to my mind that Steve Jobs, who was clearly someone who was a lifelong learner, clearly somebody who was trying to create space

2:16.3

between thoughts and actions,

2:18.5

and challenging not just all the thoughts

2:21.8

that were embedded in him all of that software but his own thinking.

2:26.8

And Johnny I've talked about how he would get frustrated with his own mind that the Steve would get frustrated with the

2:35.3

limitations of his own thinking which I think is a very distinct kind of

2:41.1

highly elevated enlightened matter way of looking at yourself.

2:48.6

You that you have examined your thinking enough and that you go, how why is it still thinking like that?
