Summary

Dr. Thomas O’Grady, an economist, walks listeners through rethinking retirement and prospering long after 50. Life expectancy is approaching 90. Many active years ahead offer opportunities for pursuing new careers and interests. “Approach the new reality from an optimistic standpoint,” economist O’Grady advises. “You can learn and do new things. Think of the kinds of careers that will be available in the future. You may be doing something full-time now and decide on some new or other work you will do on the side. Or, you may decide to start your own business.”

decided that I should really start helping us in a sense of, as I said to her one day, gee,

1:06.8

you know, I've helped a lot of people make gobs of money. We're talking about major people and major companies.

But as I was doing it, I said, gee, you know, I should be sharing this with other people because it's a major issue and problem today in society. And let me explain that a little bit. Please. Let's assume that

1:33.1

a person's approaching 50 years of age or at 50 years of age. They start thinking in terms,

1:39.0

gee, what am I going to do when I retire? You know, everybody's been thinking in the past of that

1:43.1

retirement age of 65, etc., or something

1:45.9

earlier or something later, but those kinds of things. So they start thinking of where do I want to

1:50.4

live, what do I want to do, et cetera. And quite frankly, the world has changed. It used to be,

1:56.2

an economist, we used to call from 45 to 64 the net savings years. What that means is that your kids are out

2:03.6

of the house, your bills are paid for, you don't have the problems you used to have, and you
