Summary

We're all told that failing is a good thing, but it doesn't make it that much easier in the moment and we have a tendency to miss out on the learning that could help us on the way. This week, Helen and Sarah talk about how to move forward from failure by practicing 'pre-emptive' failure and working out how best to respond to failure depending on the situation. There are lots of practical ideas for action which are summarised in the PodSheet (you'll find the podsheet in the links below). Ways to learn (even) more: 1. Sign-up for PodMail, a weekly summary of squiggly career tools https://mailchi.mp/squigglycareers/podmail 2. Download the PodSheet at https://www.amazingif.com/listen/ 3. Hi, I'm Helen and I'm Sarah and this is the Squiggly Careers podcast, a weekly show where we talk about something to do with work, could be anything, but it's designed to help you to navigate your career, the ups, the downs, the ins and outs to give you some skills and support to work your way through whatever is happening at the moment. And if you

0:22.1

would like some support beyond the podcast, we've got lots of things for you. So we have a weekly

0:26.8

free session called Popplus where you can connect with some like-minded listeners who like talking

0:31.6

about this stuff a little bit more. And we dive deeper into the topic, which today is about

0:35.1

failure. More on that in a second. You can also

0:37.5

sign up for Podmail. It's a weekly email that has all of our pod sheets in it and all of our

0:42.2

pod notes in there. So sort of swipable summaries, editable tools that you can fill out so you can

0:46.8

learn a bit more from what you might be listening to. All of that stuff is in the show notes.

And if you ever can't find it, you can always email us where Helen and Sarah at squiggly careers.com. But today, our topic is how you move forward from

0:59.3

failure. I always think our topics do reflect a little bit what's going on in our lives at the

1:04.4

moment. Well, what should we talk about this week? What is it up and down in and out that we're

1:08.8

struggling with? So, more generally, kind of outside of Helen and I's world, why moving forward from failure in a squiggly career?

1:17.4

Well, I was thinking about this and I do feel like within a squiggly career, failure is even more inevitable, probably than it has been before, which might sound a bit demotivating,

1:27.9

but I don't think the question anymore is like, will you fail or how do I stop myself from

1:32.2

failing? It's more when you fail, how do you respond? And that's why we've called it kind of

1:36.7

moving forward. And I think that's because we're all developing in different directions,

1:41.4

all of that unlearning and relearning, being a beginner, all of the

1:44.4

uncertainty and change. I think everything around us, almost our context, has increased the

1:50.2

chances of frequent failure. But the more you read about this, the more you realize that often

1:56.0

it's our relationship with failure and it's how we respond that makes a really big difference.

2:01.5

So it happens to all of us and it happens to the best of us.

2:04.6

But today we're going to really try and help you with not only sort of why is it hard
