I ran a pest control service in my small hometown.

I worked on my own and prided myself on offering a high-quality service at a good rate.

You never knew what you might encounter next in my line of business,

and after dealing with a hornet's nest in an attic,

I was on my way to investigate strange sounds coming from a basement.

My destination that day was a reminder of my hometown's past.

These days, it was a sleepy kind of place.

But years ago, it was a busy fishing port and I was heading for one of the old stone houses facing the ocean that the fishermen and their families had lived in.

As I reached my destination, I noticed that the Releaders sign out front had been changed from

for sale to sold. I had known the man who had lived there. He had passed away from the big

sea not long into the new year, and his children had put

the place on the market.

It had been snapped up quickly.

That didn't surprise me.

It had what the realtor was called, character and charm.

All I knew about the new owner was their surname and that they had sounded stressed on the phone

when they had called to tell me something was scrabbling and scratching in their basement

in the night.

They were worried.
