Edward Wood was born on April 16, 1881, the sixth child and fourth son of the Viscount Halifax. His mother was the daughter of the Earl of

Devon. His father was the head of the English Church Union, an Anglo-Catholic organization that

emphasized the Catholic heritage of the Anglican Church,

hence his son was raised with a deep spiritual commitment to Anglicanism with a Catholic slant
