0:19.0	Today we look at two of my favorite books in the Old Testament, and that is First and Second Maccabees.
0:26.0	It tells the story of warriors who are zealous for the law of God, in particular for the temple of God and for the law of God, in particular for the temple of God
0:33.8	and for the liturgy of God.
0:36.6	And I'm putting first and second Maccabees together
0:39.2	in one video because first Maccabees
0:41.7	gives us the historical rundown. Second Maccabees gives us the historical rundown.
0:44.0	Second Maccabees kind of repeats that historical story,
0:47.8	but also gives us some more details
0:50.0	and especially some theology.
0:51.9	So today we'll look at the narrative of the Maccubian revolt,
0:55.5	told in first and second Maccubies,
0:57.6	and then towards the end I'll talk about the theology,
0:59.8	especially as it's hashed out by second Maccabees. So let's get started. So First Maccabees has
1:06.6	16 chapters, Second Macabees has 15 chapters, and unlike First Macabees Second Maccabees does not attempt to provide a complete account of the events.
1:17.0	Instead, it covers only the period from the High Priest Onius III and King'Nius III, to the defeat of Naconor in 161.
1:29.0	Now recall that the Judayans were exiled first by the Babylonians, who were conquered then by the Persians.
1:35.6	And the Persians, as I've mentioned before, allowed the Judeans to return to Jerusalem.
1:40.7	This is in the book of Ezra and Nehemiah to rebuild the temple, relearn the law of God, and rebuild the walls of the city of Jerusalem.
1:50.0	Now, Alexander the Great, you've all heard of him, he conquered the known world and he conquered the Persians, but he died at the age of 33.
