Summary

We loaded up on sympathy baguettes for UTMB racers before recording this great episode! The main topic was digesting everything from UTMB week, including Jim Walmsley reinforcing his GOAT status, Courtney Dauwalter reinforcing hers, the coolest coaching story ever from Scott Johnston (who coached Ruth Croft and Tom Evans to UTMB wins), training takeaways, and so much more!

The science breakdown looked at a new study that is being used to argue that low carb doesn’t hurt high-intensity performance. We dive into the study design and statistics to show why that’s the wrong conclusion.

And this one had so many great topics! Other topics: going dark on the trails, Megan’s new fast shoe, our trail supershoe rundown, the new Champion Plan for 100k to 100 miles, the minimum dose of passive heat training, using weight vests, what makes a good coach, a relationship question, relying on liquid carbs, engaging the glutes, drinking from streams, and climbing form.

What’s for dinner? We’ll take the European Aid Station--baguettes, sausage, cheese, sparkling water, techno music, and being unable to drop out due to the language barrier.

We love you all! HUZZAH!

start curb stopping bitches, that was us. Okay, so we're on this trail. I'm coming back to running after Ledville. My body is a little bit tired. But Megan had a big long run yesterday. I wanted to support her in the high mountains. This was really important. It's worth a little bit of a risk. And I got out there. And I felt like a bag of dicks, as we say on this podcast. Like everything hurt. I was just tired, but I'm like, I need to be there from a girl. And I could tell. So the first 10 miles was like uphill. Big uphill. Big uphill. To 13,000 feet. So very high elevation. On the Rapid Hill Glacier Trail, which is beautiful. And I was out there just like loving it. Like the mountains were beautiful were beautiful. You were so vibing so hard and I hated you for it. I was just feeling the mountains. I was like, look at those mountains. They're stunning. I'm loving this. And you were silent almost the entire time. Like, every once in a while I could tell you were like forcing something and you're like, Megan, you're running really well. And you were like digging from your bag of courage to like tell me that. I reached into my saddlebag of courage. Yeah, occasionally I'd be like, those mountains are so beautiful looking at your ass. No, so I would like actually do that where I would catch up to you and then I'd say, you look so great, you know, like talking about your form. And then I would drop back like 100 or 200 meters to just

start cursing under my breath. And power hiking too. I was like, power hiked a lot. You're on like team never hike. And I was like when David's back there hiking, I was like something is going on with his existence. And it was involuntary hiking. It just came out of me. I couldn't do anything else. You had no power to do anything else.

So we get to the top and turn around.

And then

because it's downhill, you were just like, you know, catching back up. Yeah. And being so funny,

2:07.7

like I wish we had a podcast mic on you because it was hilarious. Well, what happened is I went

from like very nihilistic on the way up where no jokes were happening because literally

2:16.3

what's the point to running to life to anything, to existence to the universe actually, to the Big Bang cellular division, everything. Fuck mitosis. But then on the way down, I realized I was actually going to be able to get back to the car because the whole way up, I'm like, I don't know what's going to happen. I'm just going to be one of those frozen dead guys up here. Same. I was singing about all the different ways that I could come rescue you up top. And I was like, he's just continuing to like move up and up. How are you going to get him back down? And so you channeled all of this nihilistic energy into hating the trail itself. Yeah. And for five miles just insulted the shit out of the trail. It was so funny. Fuck the
