Summary

Dr. Paul Copan joins the podcast to use his expertise to help me analyze some theological overlap I see between the movement of progressive Christianity and the New Apostolic Reformation. Progressive Christianity seeks to reframe Christianity by de-emphasizing personal salvation, biblical authority/innerancy, and by attempting to harmonize it with cultural sexual ethics. In the other hand, NAR emphasizes the miraculous and leans toward a prosperity gospel. How are both movements getting to their conclusions? Are they interpreting the Bible through the same erroneous lens? Join Alisa and Dr. Copan as they tackle this fascinating question. ------------------------------------------------------------------This video is sponsored by:FOUNDATION WORLDVIEWFoundation Worldview creates curriculum series that will empower your child to thinkBiblically in a deceptive world. Welcome to the Elisa Childers podcast where we equip Christians to identify the core beliefs of

0:13.9

historic Christianity discern its counterfeits and proclaim the gospel with

0:18.1

clarity, kindness, and truth. And I'm very excited for today's episode because I

0:22.4

invited Dr. Paul Copan on the show to help me make sense of some commonalities that I've been observing lately between the movements of progressive Christianity and then the more hyper-charismatic

0:34.7

movements as would be associated with churches like Bethel in Reading.

0:39.5

And so if you've been following the podcast for the past several weeks, you'll remember that I reviewed a book

0:44.6

called How to Raise the Dead by Tyler Johnson. Now Tyler Johnson is a graduate of

0:50.2

Bethel's Supernatural School of Ministry and this is a book that at least at one point was

0:55.1

sold in the Bethel Bookstore. And the book claims that it should be normative for Christians to be

1:02.1

walking around performing miracles on a daily basis, even raising people from the dead.

1:07.4

Now one of the main points that Tyler Johnson makes in the book is that in his opinion Christians should be reading the Bible

1:15.2

through the lens of Jesus and he quotes Bethel Redding's pastor Bill Johnson who famously

1:20.6

said Jesus is perfect theology.

1:22.9

Maybe you've heard that phrase,

1:24.4

Jesus is perfect theology.

1:26.3

And so the idea in the book is that when we read narratives

1:30.8

in the Old Testament, when you read about God being a God of wrath or punishing a group of people for sin,

1:37.0

you filter that through the way Jesus acted while he was incarnate on Earth.

1:42.0

And if Jesus didn't go around doing and saying things like that,

1:45.0

then you can sort of reinterpret those passages

1:48.1

of the Old Testament to be understood more

1:51.0

as just Israel not really understanding God or they were just
