Summary

12% of all gym sign-ups happen in January, but what is unique about health and fitness for the queer community? Body confidence, body image, and the gym itself can be a thorny topic for LGBTQ+ people. Today we are joined by Matt Boyles, who specialises in helping gay, bisexual and trans men to improve their relationship with exercise! It’s a brilliant episode about broadening your fitness goals beyond physical changes and understanding how gay shame can present itself in a fitness environment. Prepare to be inspired and see y’all in the gym!

Oh, sorry you've just caught me doing some lovely exercises because it's the beginning of the

0:17.5

year everybody and what better way to kick it off than a little bit of a fitness regime, right?

0:24.6

Because that's what everybody's doing. Everybody's doing new exercise plans. I was

0:29.2

talking to the builder today. He's gone down to the gym. He's signed signed up that's what people do in January right so that's

0:36.4

what we're going to be talking about today I mean last week we had Cody Rigsby on the

0:40.6

world famous Peloton cyclist, instructor, he's an instructor Chris. I managed to not

0:46.9

talk to him about exercise once which I think was really good and sort of slightly tells you

0:52.2

enough as you need to know about me and exercise.

0:54.6

But this week it's all different because we are joined by Matt Boiles,

0:59.9

PT for GBTQ-plus guys who will talk about where the L's gone from that little list in a second.

1:10.0

But hello Matt, thanks for joining me. How are you? I am very well Chris. Thank you for having me on.

1:15.6

delighted to be here. Now I discovered you on Instagram because the algorithm probably showed me you and

1:22.2

I loved what I saw,

1:25.2

because one thing that we talked about a lot on this podcast

1:28.2

is like, exercising LGBT-plus people

1:31.0

is really specific. Like a lot of us are getting scared in those

1:35.8

gyms they're just they're weird places aren't they? But how how did you get

1:40.2

started in it all Matt Matt? Well, very late, I would say comparatively in life, because growing

1:47.5

up I went to a school that was really rugby, and in the 80s I was a very skinny spindly child who didn't like playing rugby

1:56.6

funnily enough. I didn't like being beaten up in the mud twice a week in winter.

2:00.3

Exactly, fuck that. I know, and it didn didn't at the time it really didn't feel like there was much other provision for any other sport or fitness outlets

2:09.0

certainly in my school like no other encouragement for people who weren't other than in the 18 rugby.
