Summary

Our meandering through the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters continues with Final Fantasy II, widely considered the 'black sheep' of the traditional series. But a lot of that hinges on perception, or lack thereof. See, Final Fantasy II took forever to come to the west -- it came to Famicom in 1988 but never migrated outside of Japan until it launched on PSone in 2003 -- so the reality is, a lot of people don't have any experience with it at all. And those that do have played it in sometimes less-than-ideal circumstances, though there are some good ports and reworkings on GBA (2004) and PSP (2007) to note. This episode of KnockBack, not surprisingly, is dedicated to the beleaguered II, the odd-man-out of classic Final Fantasy. With a differentiated experience system, an easily-broken economy, and actual characters and story, it's certainly a tale of ups and downs. Learn more about your ad choices. My name is Colin Moriarty. I'm joined as always by my brother,

0:19.8

Dagen Moriarty. Dagen, it's good to see you, my friend. How are you today?

0:23.3

You mean, Dagen, I'm cooler than your dad? Moriarty?

0:28.5

What does that mean? I need a moniker. I don't know. I just need a thing.

0:31.6

And I'm seeing a lot of, uh, Dagen's a dad energy lately in the YouTube

0:38.1

feedback specifically, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I am, and I'm an aging dad.

0:44.4

What do I mean to do? I talk about these things, but I'm still, you know, and you know,

0:49.6

let me ask you a question, because I'm workshopping it or shopping the moniker, the nickname,

0:54.3

do you think being cooler than your dad? Maybe that sends the wrong message. Like,

1:00.7

that's actually the opposite. That's maybe not so cool. No offense to your dad. But

1:07.3

maybe that doesn't take much to be cooler than our dad. This is what you're saying.

1:11.6

So it's kind of like a passive compliment. Yeah, or passive aggressive one. I'm not sure,

1:17.1

right? And I think, and everything post funds, everything post Arthur Fonzarelli, I think calling

1:25.6

yourself cool automatically means you're not cool. Are you talking about funds in the historical

1:32.0

sense, like in the 50s or funds in the TV show of the 70s and 80s? No, that's a good question.

1:37.2

I'm talking about funds as a pop culture icon. Okay, got it. So 70s in the 80s. He's cool.

1:42.8

He said as much and he was really cool. Everything after that, as soon as you're saying,

1:46.8

you're cool, right? You're losing that sort of nuanced hipster flavor of you're supposed to

1:52.8

just know I'm cool without me saying it. But like everything, I'm maybe overthinking it a bit.
