Summary

Do you find yourself overeating during this stressful time? Maybe drinking or smoking more than you would like? What about shopping or gambling? And how's your relationship to your phone these days? Our guest this episode, Dr. Judson Brewer, is an addiction psychiatrist - with a special interest in how mindfulness can help. He says we all sit somewhere on the spectrum of addiction. And when you add stress into the system- in this time of pandemic, recession and racial strife- many of us move the wrong way along the spectrum, toward hardcore addiction. And of course, for people who already have full blown addictions, the current conditions can be an utter disaster. But again, Jud has good news. He's used mindfulness and meditation to treat people with addictions to cigarettes, food, and opioids. He is the Director of Research and Innovation at the Mindfulness Center at the School of Medicine at Brown University. He has written a book, called The Craving Mind, and founded three apps to help people with eating, smoking cessation, and anxiety. Before we dive in, I want to mention that we recorded this episode a few weeks ago - right before the recent protests. As you will hear, though, this conversation is still fully relevant. With that said, here we go with Jud Brewer. Hey, it's Dan. As you may already know, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and while mental

0:04.7

health is important every month, this month is an opportunity to share some resources that can

0:10.0

really help. So in that spirit, I want to tell you about some of the other podcasts I really

0:15.2

admire and respect in this space. The podcast's Meditative Story, a slight change of plans,

0:22.7

last day, and on being are all doing incredible work to advance mental health and explore the

0:29.1

human condition. And throughout this month, I'm going to share a little bit more about each one of

0:33.1

those shows. So this week, I want to share one of my favorite podcasts. It's called Meditative Story,

0:38.5

and it blends immersive storytelling with gentle mindfulness prompts to help you improve your inner

0:43.6

weather. As you know, my own mental health improvements really began in earnest when I found meditation

0:50.4

for myself. And since then, it's really become an invaluable tool to help me deal with anxiety

0:55.4

and depression and just the regular ups and downs of life. So the format of Meditative Story really

1:00.4

feels like an intuitive way to experience mindfulness. Every episode is also wrapped in a breathtaking

1:06.6

musical score, which I personally find pretty relaxing. Some of the storytellers over on Meditative

1:11.2

Story are people you might already know, including Sharon Salzburg, Krista Tippett, David Duchovny,

1:17.3

and me, I actually recorded an episode with them myself not too long ago. Others are newer voices,

1:23.2

but every episode is really extremely cool. So many people who listen to the show have said that

1:28.3

it's just a crucial resource for them in supporting their own mental health. And maybe you'll end up

1:33.0

following Meditative Story wherever you get your podcast. Hello, I'm Hannah. And I'm Sieruti.

1:38.4

And we are the hosts of Redhanded, a weekly True Crime Podcast. Every week on Redhanded, we get stuck

1:43.8

into the most talked about cases. From Idaho student killings, the Delphi murders, and our recent

1:48.7

rundown of the Murdoch saga. Last year, we also started a second weekly show, Shorthand, which is

1:55.3

just an excuse for us to talk about anything we find interesting because it's our show and we
