This is a really controversial thing. As you can imagine, smartphone

manufacturers and people in the tech industry are absolutely falling over

backwards to give congressional testimony saying there's no evidence at all

that spending a lot of time on smartphones

has effect on mental health. But there are a lot of mental health professionals

and academics who are bringing together what seems to be increasingly convincing evidence that there's a direct relationship

between the amount of time that people spend on smartphones, particularly social media,

and real instances of depression, anxiety, many issues amongst young people.

And it then brings us to the question of legislation.

China, China's cyberspace administration has proposed limiting children's

smartphone use to two hours a day and I guess being China they could probably

get the manufacturers to put limits on those phones to make sure that that happened.

12 states in the US have been looking at this.

UNESCO has been looking at this.

We've had stuff in the UK which I strongly support and I cannot

understand why it's controversial. I keep getting attacked on Twitter whenever I suggest it.
