Summary

The iconography and texts of most spiritual traditions depict and describe realms of existence more subtle than ordinary sensory perception reveals. The most commonly portrayed phenomena are halos in paintings of saints. But in addition to this evidence of the human “subtle body”, the traditions are abundant with paintings and stories of subtle beings such as angels, gods, devas, demons, etc. Is this mere mythology or does it suggest that subtle perception is part of spiritual development? So far, the non-dual community has not discussed this at all. The New Age community has, but often in a fanciful way that the non-dual community has, perhaps wisely, chosen to eschew. Yet many who have had abiding awakenings that non-dual traditions predict and respect discover, in time, that subtle perception begins to dawn. They begin to perceive auras, angels, devas, and the like as routinely as most of us see other human beings. 0:33.9	This will be a panel discussion on refined or is it sometimes called celestial perception.
0:40.3	And the reason I wanted to do this is that, first of all, if you read the spiritual literature of various traditions or look at the art, the iconography,
0:53.3	you see plenty of references or depictions,
0:57.0	references to or depictions of stuff that people don't ordinarily perceive
1:03.0	in with their gross sensory capabilities.
1:06.0	You know, you see halos, oras, angels, all this stuff.
1:11.1	Those traditions are rife with that kind of thing.
1:15.4	And so that's part...
1:17.3	The question is, what's going on?
1:21.0	What is all that?
1:21.8	If it's so common in the spiritual literature,
1:25.2	is it important?
1:26.8	Is it something that people can expect to begin experiencing as they evolve spiritually?
1:33.3	And indeed, I often get emails from people.
1:36.3	I got one just this week from a woman in Australia who,
1:40.3	I actually have some notes on it here, she walked into her three-year-old daughter's bedroom
1:48.0	and had an unexpected kundalini awakening three years ago. She wasn't really into this stuff at all.
1:53.0	The experience started with a deep gravitational pull to meditate. She wasn't a meditator.
1:58.0	And then she saw a red line go straight up through her spine and out the center of her eyebrows.
