Summary

While all of the political wrangling was occurring in Tamworth, Guthrum-AEthelstan was relocating to East Anglia, and he was bringing serious changes with him. Culture isn’t something that you can easily uproot in a person – it goes deep. Sure, Guthrum had spent 12 days feasting like and Anglo Saxon, and even gave that one […]

Welcome to the British History Podcast. My name is Jamie and this is episode 233,

0:10.0

Outference Powerplay and the Restructuring of Lessx. As always, this show is

0:16.4

ad-free due to member support and as a way of thanking members for keeping the

0:20.3

show independent, I offer members only content including extra episodes and

0:24.9

rough transcripts. And this month we've had two members episodes that you

0:28.6

might be interested in. The first is about a two-hour long discussion with

0:32.5

Dr. Z on the subject of her PhD. One of the nice things about working with Z is

0:37.6

that I'm always learning something new when talking to her. And to be perfectly

0:41.6

honest, even though I was the editor for her PhD and so I'm quite familiar with it,

0:46.8

I still learn new things during this discussion. It really was a fun talk and

0:51.8

I was pleased that she decided to make herself available to the members. The

0:55.5

other episode that was released this month centers around a rather odd story

1:08.9

charters trying to piece together the story of Alfred after he retakes his

1:12.9

kingdom, I noticed that there was evidence of a major shake-up going on in

1:17.3

Mercia at the same time. And at some point, Alfred and Guthram signed a treaty

1:22.9

which split Mercia into two and at some other point a man named Atholred took

1:28.2

control of Mercia, or at least part of Mercia. And the thing that was driving me

1:33.2

nuts was that everyone seems to have different timelines for these events. And

1:37.8

each timeline suggests a completely different version of reality. And that's

1:42.5

really consequential because by the end of all of these events, Mercia is
