It's December 23rd. I'm Brian Dean Wright, former CIA operations officer, and this is The Wright Report.

0:12.2

A good day to you, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Wright Report, Your Daily News, podcast.

0:22.4

It's a headline brief this morning. Heavy on news, light on analysis for this holiday week.

0:27.5

But as ever, the news is still going to shape America and the world.

0:32.7

We first begin with U.S. service members in the Middle East, two of them.

0:36.9

Two U.S. naval pilots are safe

0:38.7

this morning, but only after they ejected from their F.A. 18 Hornet jet. That was over the

0:43.8

weekend. It was accidentally shot down over the Red Sea by their fellow servicemen on the USS

0:50.0

Gettysburg. The Washington Post and others are reporting that the friendly fire incident took

0:55.6

place yesterday morning after the jet took off from the USS Harry Truman and inexplicably,

1:01.6

the USS Gettysburg then took aim at the jet. It fired a surface-to-air missile called the

1:06.4

SM2. The pilots ejected, thank God, suffered only minor injuries. They are now safe. The jet is not. It sits on the seafloor this morning. A full investigation is now underway. Pivoting to quick analysis and opinion, folks, this is remarkable and frightening. For this to have happened would have required a shocking number of

1:28.6

failures up and down the chain of command and a failure of technology on certainly the ship

1:33.6

and on the jet that is designed to prevent this from happening. So let's put this incident

1:38.5

on our radars, especially as we think about leadership and tech failures in the military this

1:43.1

morning. We are also going to

1:44.6

be watching for how or if this jet can be recovered. It's got some sensitive technologies on board.

1:51.6

By the way, this accident is going to cost taxpayers like you a pretty penny. We'll start with a

1:56.6

little cost, the SM2. That should not have been fired, but it was. So that's going to cost you

2:01.3

about $1 to $2 million for that. Meanwhile, the replacement cost for the jet, oh dear, it's going to

2:07.1

run somewhere between $50 million to $100 million for a new one. So there you go. Next, an update on

2:13.6

the drone wars here at home. On Friday, the FAA expanded flight restrictions in New York,
