compassion fatigue. I think it's helpful to know what compassion fatigue is and what some of the

early signs are, plus what to do if you think you might be experiencing compassion fatigue.

So first of all, what is compassion fatigue?

In 1992, a historian named Carla Joinsen coined the term compassion fatigue, which encouraged

further research into the concept.

Dr. Charles Figley, a world-renowned trauma expert and researcher, defined compassion fatigue as a state of exhaustion and dysfunction,

biologically, physiologically and emotionally, as a result of prolonged exposure to compassion stress.

Basically, compassion fatigue happens when you spend too much time being exposed to other

people's suffering and it starts to affect you.

Compassion fatigue is more common among people who work in jobs that require regular caring

for others or being exposed to other people's trauma, like being a nurse or doctor, a vet, police officer,

teacher, mental health professional, journalist or firefighter.

There are definitely other jobs that can lead to compassion fatigue.
