Hi everybody, it's Joe Lample, the Joe Behind Joe Gardner, and welcome to the Joe Gardner

Show.

What comes to your mind when I say the term, food forest?

For me, it's literally a forest of food producing trees and plants, and that vision wouldn't

be wrong, but when I think of a forest, I see massive scale.

But as you'll hear today, we're going to learn about what a food forest really is, and

what makes a food forest a food forest, even on an urban lot.

And yes, you can easily scale down a food forest to an urban front or backyard setting,

and we'll talk all about that.

Now perhaps you've been hearing the term more and more in recent years, I know I have,

in fact, in Atlanta where I live, a few years ago they converted a large tract of land

just south of downtown into a very large, intentional food forest.

And that's where I first really learned about what they are and how they can be used to

make the most use of urban and suburban space to grow more food.

It's a fascinating concept, and one that takes it up a level, literally from just your

basic vegetable garden, food forests are rooted in permaculture principles.

So you'll quite often hear these concepts mentioned together, or as one with the term

perennial polyculture.
