The great awokening of the institutions, the way in which white graduate liberals are moving

further away from rest of the country, the adverts, the films, the publishing industry, the

books, the plays, the columnists, the newspapers, the TV, I think we can just all sense that

the culture that we are surrounded with is no longer coming close to representing the

country that it claims to represent. And I think that's just becoming increasingly visible

to people as the people who dominate those institutions basically drift away from the

rest of us. And that's not sustainable, there will be a correction.

guest this week, Matthew Goodwin. Matt, welcome to the show.

Thanks for having me, Brendan. I should say welcome back to the show. Last time we had you

on, we were talking about the rise of Rishi Sunek to the Prime Minister's ship, the collapse

of the very short-lived Liz Truss era, and all the kind of chaos that was swirling around

that. And now I've got you back on to talk about your book in which you historicise not

only that crisis and the changing nature of conservative party politics, but all the other

revolts and realignments and interesting events of British politics of the past few years.

So your book is values, voice and virtue, the new British politics. I highly recommend

it to listen as it's a really good read. I guess the best way for us to kick off is if

you just explain why you felt the need to write this book. We can dig down into all the

stuff that it talks about, how it addresses the revolts in British politics, the changing

shape of British politics. But what was it that made you think you need to do an overview

of what's been happening on the political front over the past couple of decades?
