Surviving Everest with Type 1 diabetes.

This is a conversation with Elna Naurula.

Elna is the mother of a girl who has type 1.

Her daughter, Swati, is in her 20s. She is a journalist and

recently in the spring of 2015 had the opportunity to travel to Everest to do some work. While she was there, there was a significant earthquake in

Kathmandu that triggered an avalanche on Everest. It killed a number of people in the base camp and Swati was right in the middle

of that avalanche. So the first part of this podcast is going to be talking to Elma about being the mom of a child with type one and some of the things she went through when

Swati came to her with this idea of a trip to Everest. And then in part two we're going to talk specifically about

finding out that there was an avalanche where her daughter was and how Elna had a span of time where she wasn't sure

if Swati was dead or alive and then everything that happened after that leading up to

Swati coming home.

This is really a fascinating conversation and you will know that as you're listening if you've

listened to the podcast in the past because I don't talk very much during it.

Elna seemed to me like this may be one of the first times that she was talking about it

out loud and I really did not want to get in the way.

So you'll hear me interject a little bit during part one, but part two is really going to be listening to the story from these amazing people.
