John 316, what a powerful passage.

We're looking at it word by word.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son,

that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

That passage so packed with promise,

but it also carries a warning in the form of

the word perish. We want to hurry and discuss eternal life, don't we? It's not so pleasant to ponder

eternal death. We don't get to pick and choose scripture. We simply need to attempt to understand it.

One question that seems to surface a lot is the severity of hell. It seems inconsistent with a God of love, right?

A sinner's rebellion doesn't warrant an eternity of suffering, does it?

Isn't God overreacting?

Is God being unfair?

Now, some have wrestled with this question and come to a conclusion that God will annihilate the unrepent on the day of judgment.

And I'll say this position is held by dear friends of mine

colleagues for whom I have the greatest respect. And I hope they're correct. I do. There's a few

scriptures that keep me from really agreeing wholeheartedly with them. They may be correct.
