Summary

Athletes will get hit with illness. It is a part of the fabric of the journey of performance.

(16:50) "In fact, the truth is, a smart coach will plan for sickness and injuries, no different than a contingency plan when you're making a budget."

But how do you emerge from being under the weather in an effective way that will provide minimal downtime?

Coach Matt Dixon provides that framework and counsel on managing sickness and emerging back to full-steam ahead. There are no gimmicks, no magic potions, and no quick fixes; just a practical guide to managing and emerging through sickness as a performance enthusiast.

First of all, it's important to do your best to prevent major illness from happening by nailing the basics - prioritizing cleanliness, emphasizing good sleep, plenty of hydration, solid nutrition, and managing life stressors.

(20:10) "The accumulation of too much stress is going to leave your body with lower defenses."

(25:54) "When sickness arises, you ability to positively adapt to a training schedule is - unarguably - severely limited or even eliminated."

Knowing this, your goal is to return to the mission as quickly as possible, with minimal interruption. You can't ignore it and plow on because 'that’s what your plan said.' Remember, life is not a spreadsheet. You must adapt and navigate because,

(28:34)“The key to success is the consistency of effective training.”

Returning from illness requires patience, pragmatism, and logic, but it also requires a little guidance. In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Depending on the type of symptoms (head vs. chest congestion), when is it ok to train?

  • How long should I rest and do nothing?

  • What is the timeline to return to training?

  • How long should I wait to "hit it hard" and get back on plan?

  • Should I try to make up for lost time?

  • What about supplements and vitamins?

If you want to avoid, reduce risk, and defend against illness, start building those healthy habits and an approach that creates physical resilience and a long-term platform of health.

And let me tell you a story about a couple of weeks ago.

0:29.3

Barry, who I'm sure you know, our camera operator and our video coaching sessions, but also

0:35.1

big role in this podcast, he got the sniffles. It was a few days of feeling

0:41.4

low. And then a home test displayed the dark line of Omicron. Now before you fret and start your

0:49.7

fan mail of support, don't worry, Barry is fine. He emerged. But as he and I were chatting over

0:56.2

a lovely meal that he made for me, bangers a mash in case you're interested. Yes, sausages over mashed

1:02.2

potatoes and gravy with a little side of peas. Anyway, he named it performance nutrition. I was not

1:08.8

one to argue or judge. But there we were, Chasnaway,

1:12.8

and join our meal and he asked me the question. Matt, how do I navigate out of this illness and

1:19.8

get back to my training? Well, ladies and gentlemen, this confused me. I'd never really

1:25.6

considered Barry to be one to train. Sweat, yes,

1:31.5

straight through his light grey t-shirt. And that's just from the glare and the heat of the

1:36.6

studio lights, but no more than that. But his question sparked an idea. All of us, athletes, fitness and enthusiasts, we all have to

1:48.1

navigate sickness. It's part of life. So perhaps we should go a show focused on it. And here

1:54.4

we are today, a performance show to provide a framework and a little bit of counsel on managing

1:59.9

sickness. And of course,

emerging from sickness back to full steam ahead. No gimmicks, no magic potions, no quick fixes,
