Summary

Brendan Kane is a bestselling author and influential marketing advisor to celebrities, pro athletes, and major brands. He’s helped clients like Taylor Swift, Paramount Studios, Vice, and IKEA make content that consistently goes viral. Despite how it may feel, the algorithms are not working against you. They are one of the keys to making viral content. In this episode, Brendan walks us through his process for creating quality content that appeals to a broad audience and makes our algorithmic adversaries happy. Want to know the secret to social media success? Effective storytelling. The best content comes from stories that resonate with people on many levels. According to Brendan, there are six different ways people perceive content. We can use that information to tell better stories with context that matters to our prospective audience. Brendan also dispels myths and outdated advice for how to “beat” the algorithm. For instance, unleashing a consistent torrent of content will not yield better engagement results because crappy content is still crappy. If you want to improve your content, be more strategic with social media, and connect with a wide range of people, listen closely to this episode. of content.

0:04.0

There's a lot of myths about the algorithms.

0:05.7

One of them is they suppress your reach

0:07.3

to get you to pay for reach.

0:09.0

So to boost your post, run paid ads.

0:11.8

But if that were the case, nobody would ever go viral. So what

0:14.9

are the algorithms really care about? They care about user retention. The

0:18.6

longer people spend on a platform, the more ads they can serve, thus the more revenue they generate. I'm going to do. For people who don't know who you are Brendan can you just briefly introduce yourself and

0:53.1

tell us a little bit of your backstory. Yeah my backstory is interesting in that I

0:59.2

got into social media very early so I started in like 2004 2005 so I'm going to date myself a bit but I started on like

1:08.3

Friendsster in my space and it was kind of by accident you know I was going to film school because I wanted to be a film producer.

1:15.0

But when I showed up at film school, I realized they teach you nothing about business there.

1:19.0

And I'm like, well, I probably should know something about business if I want to be on the business side of the film industry so the most cost efficient way at the time and it still holds true today is to start internet companies so I was just creating internet companies while I was going to college, really just to learn an experiment

1:36.5

so that I had kind of a leg up when I was going to LA to pursue a career in film.

1:44.2

Because in my second book is all about this hook point

1:47.6

is how do I go into a notoriously difficult industry

1:51.8

to break into and have a leg up. So I showed up in L.A.

1:56.5

After I graduated film school in about around 2005 and like everybody else I was making coffee and copies and

2:03.5

deliveries you have to start at the bottom and when people would ask me what

2:08.0

do I want to do I would say that I wanted to be a film producer and I could see

2:11.4

everybody's eyes glaze over you know because I was just one of a million kids with a pipe dream.
