Over the years I’ve asked my students to describe the connection with their dog in different environments. How is it different inside your house versus your front yard? What about the park? Or, around other dogs or children? Often the response describes the emotional connection “to” their dog; not the two-way connection “with” their dog. We’re covering what that difference is between the connection to versus connection with our dogs, why it's super important to understand, and how growing one can also grow the other.

In the episode you'll hear:

• How connection TO a dog differs from connection WITH a dog.
• What weakens and strengthens the relationship we have with dogs.
• Common words used about dogs that signal a connection crisis.
• The reasons understanding and empathy will grow your relationship.
• How the sport of dog agility, or any dog sport, is like an amplifier of connection.
• Why it's essential to protect your dog's confidence when beginning agility.
• How one of my agility students, Jenny, went from overwhelmed to elite competitor with her Siberian Huskies.
• The story of Cait's Shiba Inu, Moshi, a pandemic puppy, and how their connection evolved.
• That game by game, layer and layer, you can see the connection with your dog blossom.

Many times over the years, I've asked a student, describe to me what your connection with your

0:05.4

dog is like in different environments. Like, how is it different inside your house versus

0:09.5

in your front yard versus at a park or near a body of water or around other dogs or children?

0:16.7

Just describe what your connection with your dog is like. And what I'll be told is, oh my gosh,

0:22.2

my dog is amazing. I just love my dog. I love him so much. And what they go on to describe

0:27.3

is their connection to their dog and not the connection with their dog. And there's a big,

0:34.4

big difference. And today's podcast, I'm going to share with you what that difference is, why it's super

0:40.8

important that you understand it and how growing one can also grow the other.

Hi, welcome to shape by dog.

I'm Susan Garrett.

And when you think of connection to a dog, that can really be evaluated by when you're away on a business trip and the dog is out of sight.

1:10.4

Are they also out of mind? Or are you like me,

1:13.8

you know, thinking, oh my gosh, I'm missing my dogs. I haven't seen my dogs in like two days.

1:19.7

That's a connection to your dog. And sometimes that's just innate. Like you see the puppy or you see your rescue dog and you go,

1:29.3

oh my gosh, you're the one. And for me, I've had three dogs that I knew instantly that they

1:35.7

were the one. Either I saw a picture of them when they were newborns or they were born in my hand

1:41.5

and I knew they were the one. But sometimes that connection to

1:47.0

develops and it's kind of like people, right? Sometimes we instantly click with somebody and other

1:53.9

times that development is a little slower, but it's still every bit as deep. And a connection

1:59.9

to a dog doesn't depend on how snugly the

2:03.5

dog is. Sometimes you can't even explain it. You just know you had this deep connection to your dog.

2:11.8

Now, your connection with a dog is reflected in when you're out in a forest where your dog may be off wondering
