Summary

In episode number 2 of Backpacker Radio, we talk a whole lot of number 2. Zach "Badger" Davis and Juliana "Chaunce" Chauncey are joined by 2017 PCT thru-hiker Scuba Steve and hear his tales of hiking through The Sierra during one of the highest snow years in recorded history, including a couple of near-death experiences.

We also talk about Chaunce's plan to section hike the Colorado Trail this year, how Badger did the same in 2015, and a few noteworthy stops along the trail.

Like children, the three then discuss their favorite poop stories from their hikes, including Chaunce's introduction into sh*tting in the woods, Badger's Cliffhanger deuce in The Whites, and Scuba Steve's bizarre strategy of using notebook paper to wipe.

The trio examine the most popular packs, sleeping bags, and tents used on the Appalachian Trail in 2017, and share their own experiences with some of the gear.

And lastly, they answer a few listener questions submitted from Instagram.

0:41.0

It was 55 before 9 a.m. So you got out on the trail today where were you?

0:46.0

I was doing segment one of the Colorado Trail.

0:49.2

All right. Waterton Canyon. Yeah I remember that because ironically being so close to the city had some of the

0:56.4

best wildlife of the entire trail. Yeah almost immediately we saw a ton of

1:00.6

big horn sheep that were just sitting on the side of the road which by the way I didn't know this but the first six and a half miles of the trail

1:07.0

our dirt road yeah I didn't realize that until like they started pointing out that we were on a road for a while and then I looked it up and realized that.

1:17.0

But yeah, they were a bighorn sheep along the road just sitting there and we walked right past them close enough to almost

1:24.5

touch them and you know they just did not care it was kind of cool.

1:28.5

Yeah it's a good introduction to that trail like for the fact that the first section is road like you're saying to be able to get some almost

1:36.8

guaranteed sheep akin to the way that you would see ponies in the Grayson Highlands. It's just yeah gets the hype going a little bit.

1:46.3

It's also nice that you're able to start knocking off segments of the Colorado Trail in January.

1:52.0

And maybe Nice isn't the right word.

1:53.9

Nice for the next generation

1:56.0

will probably pay the penalty for that.

1:58.3

Right.

1:59.0

I mean, yeah, no, I definitely,

2:00.9
