At that point I just sat there and they finally turned around, ran back into the SUV and took off.

I make a phone call to the embassy

it's you know I did a stress call saying you know we've been shot or shot on the highway

identify myself as I special agent Victor Abula, I would help.

Eventually I get on the phone not only with the US agents from the embassy, but I

called the head of our vetted unit. We had a vetted unit that we worked with very closely.

You know, as U.S. diplomats and agents in Mexico, we have no authority. We do everything through the federal government, through the police there. And we have an

individual that's basically the only guy I trust it at that point because as you can imagine,

the corruption in Mexico. It's happening all the time and even

more so at that time after you've been attacked. So I call him, he answers, he's

able to deploy a helicopter from Mexico City and only call again

trusted individuals that can go and rescue us because the last thing I wanted is, you know, more bad

guys, even police, to show up and finish us off.

And 40 minutes later, it was a long, long wait on that highway until everyone showed up.

They put a helicopter, take us to the nearest Mexican hospital.
